INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
FIRESIDE CHAT WITH KIM LOCK, OPERATIONS DIRECTOR AT GB NRG
The theme for this years International Women’s Day is Accelerate Action. In light of this, I had the opportunity to sit down with our Operations Director, Kim Lock, for a conversation about her career achievements, the evolving role of women in the renewable energy sector, and what Accelerate Action means to her in the workplace.
What inspired you to work in the renewable energy sector?
I was inspired to work in the renewable energy sector because I wanted to be part of an industry that makes a real difference. Coming from a background in finance and operations, I saw the opportunity to apply my skills in a way that drives both business growth and positive environmental impact. Being a woman in this industry motivates me to challenge stereotypes and encourage more diversity. Every project we complete brings us one step closer to a cleaner, more sustainable future, and that’s what keeps me passionate about what I do.
What achievement are you most proud of in your career?
One of my proudest achievements has been transitioning from finance to operations, using my financial expertise to drive efficiencies across procurement, project execution, and overall business performance. Understanding the numbers has allowed me to streamline processes, optimise costs, and improve decision making beyond just the balance sheet. Across different industries, I’ve leveraged data driven insights to enhance operational workflows, ensuring teams work smarter and more effectively. Seeing these efficiencies translate into real-world impact is what drives me every day.
What do you think businesses can do to encourage more women to join the renewable energy sector?
Businesses can encourage more women to join the renewable energy sector by actively promoting diversity, providing clear career pathways, and fostering an inclusive workplace culture. Representation matters, so highlighting the successes of women in the industry through leadership roles, mentorship programs, and networking opportunities can inspire others to follow. Companies should also focus on flexible working policies, skills-based hiring, and targeted outreach to attract talent from diverse backgrounds. Most importantly, businesses need to create an environment where women feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive in technical and leadership roles.
What’s the best career advice you ever received?
“Never stop learning.” I self-studied for my AAT and then my ACCA, completing the latter in less than 2.5 years, proving to myself that with determination and discipline, you can achieve anything. More recently, I’ve expanded my knowledge beyond finance, completing my IOSH and Black Belt in Six Sigma to enhance my skills in operations and risk management. Working in the renewable energy sector means constantly learning about new technologies, regulations, and industry trends. For me, learning isn’t just about qualifications, it’s a mindset that drives growth, adaptability, and long-term success.
This year’s theme is #AccelerateAction – in the workplace, what does this mean to you?
I believe this means creating an environment where everyone regardless of gender, background, or experience feels valued, heard, and empowered to succeed. As a woman within a male-dominated industry, inclusion isn’t just about representation—it’s about ensuring diverse perspectives are respected and shape decision-making. It means having a seat at the table, being valued for expertise over gender, and working in a culture where opportunities are based on skills. True inclusion breaks barriers, challenges stereotypes, and fosters a workplace where collaboration and innovation thrive because of diversity. When businesses fully embrace inclusion, they unlock their workforce’s full potential, driving better results for everyone.
It was a great to hear Kim’s insights and how they highlight the power of inclusion in driving meaningful change, not just for individuals but for the entire renewable energy industry. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s continue to challenge barriers, support diverse talent, and create workplaces where everyone can thrive.
